Internship interview tips: how to prepare and what to say

Interviews · Find My Intern

Interviews feel less scary when you are prepared. Here is a simple plan.

Before the interview

  • Read the job ad again and list the three skills they care about most.
  • Look at the organisation's website and recent news.
  • Prepare a short example for each skill using the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, Result.

Questions to practise

  • Tell me about yourself.
  • Why do you want this internship?
  • Tell me about a time you worked in a team.
  • Tell me about a time something went wrong and what you did.
  • What do you want to learn here?

On the day

  • Arrive or log in 10 minutes early.
  • Have two or three questions ready to ask them, such as "What does a great intern look like here?"
  • Thank them at the end, and send a short thank-you email the same day.
