Guide · Find My Intern
Coming back to work after a break is common. People take time out to raise children, care for family, travel, study or retire. The hardest part is often the first step back in.
What an internship gives you
- Recent experience to put at the top of your resume.
- Up-to-date skills with the tools workplaces use today.
- A current referee who can speak to your work now.
- Confidence that you can do it, before you take on a permanent role.
How to explain your break
Keep it short and positive. One line on your resume is enough, for example "Career break, raising family (2021 to 2025)". Then focus on what you are bringing now, including any courses, volunteering or projects during your break.
Tips for finding the right role
- Look for flexible or part-time internships that fit your life.
- Lean on your past experience. Years of work before a break still count.
- Be open about what you want to learn. Employers value people who are keen to grow.
